tC stands for "Touring Coupe". Though people were starting rumors before the tC was released saying it stood for "Toyota Celica" since the Celica was discontinued just as the tC was released.

In Japan there all Scions are sold under the Toyota nameplate. In Japan, they Toyota Celica is still being produced, however it is a carbon copy of the Scion tC. Toyota has not confirmed it, but many believe that "tC" stands for Toyota Celica.

It stands for Touring Coupe. It's basically a touring model that's 2 dr, although, Scion hasn't come out with the full 4 dr version on the Touting. For now that have the xA and xB.
Hope this helps :)

The name tC does not fit in with its stablemates the xA and xB because the name xC has already been taken by Volvo for its XC70 and XC90 models. According to Scion, tC stands for "Touring Coupe."
