Historically,IT has been one of the best fields to be in. Unfortunately, most companies nowadays outsourced much of the work. This is no longer a field for people who want to be technical their whole career.
It is a very fast paced industry. If you want to get in and stay in you have to constantly keep up with the changing technologies. Some people love it because they love keeping up with the latest technologies. Just know that you will have to be constantly taking new courses just to keep up. More importantly, you will be competing against the new recruits coming out of college who may have the edge over you due to the fact that they have the latest technologies and maybe paid at half the price. Finally, you will be competing against those outsourced to overseas who are paid even lower.
But to answer you question. The best way to get into IT is to major in Computer Science or Information Systems in college. While in school take up internships in the IT field.

IT is a tough field to get into these days, and few trainee jobs exist since there are so many people available with experience. Best chance is probably through an internship associated with formal training from a recognized school, preferably a college or university.
With no formal qualifications, your chances aren't very good. Sorry.

I.T. is probably the worst growth field in the USA right now. Everyone and their uncle thinks that one can be a computer 'engineer' just by obtaining one of the Micro$oft toilet paper certs.
Take my advice, be a plumber. There is more money in it.

Have you approached companies and asked if they would take you on for work experience. After all they get someone to work for them foe free for a week or so and you get to not only add it to your c.v but you get to try the I.T world out before committing yourself.
