I am creating an auction website. I am confused what to do. To buy a ready made website and then alter it and add features to it (Cost around 100 British Pounds)? OR to hire a company to custom make the website exactly to my requirements , which would cost like 2,500 British Pounds to 10,000 British Pounds?! Is it possible to change template of the website but keep programming stuff unchanged?

It depends on the software. Why don't you ask the software vendor what it's capabilities are along those lines? Since we don't know WHAT software you are considering, how can we possibly know?

Hire a company....because chances are they also will do hosting for you and provide updating....To do it yourself you're sccreaming for a headache...an auction site would require credit card information from visitors interested in buying and those lines must be secured aswell as integreted throughout the site...I know its human nature to want to do it yourself but if you do not have prior education and know-how on the matter do not do it yourself..you will only aggravate yourself and have no one to blame but yourself..and yes they are expensive but its worth it in the end.

Depending on your level of web development skill, you may want to take a look at the auction application that xcent.com has for sale - I've used their products before and found them pretty easy to customize...
