My playstation 2 sometimes will not read discs I load into it. It seems sometimes that they won't spin and the laser will not read them. Help please ?

it is also possible the laser rails are dry and need to be re-greased. you need to open the case to do this so be careful. another possibility is the disc itself is slipping on the spinner, a piece of scotch tape about 1" placed near the hole of the disc will allow the spinner to grab the disc.

My first PS2 stopped reading discs and since it was still under the guarantee I got a free replacement. Then that one started playing up after the guarantee ran out so I got a lens cleaner DVD and that worked for a while, then I thought it was some of my discs being scratched so I bought 2 new games but they still didn't work so I eventually got a new mini PS2 and all my games worked including the 2 old scratched ones!
If you still have it guaranteed phone Sony, if it isn't try a disc cleaner. If that fails you may need a new machine or wait for the PS3 to come out.

More than likely laser related - possibly dusty / dirty / down on power. If its the latter, it is possible to get it 'tweaked' by a reputable repair shop; if its on its way out you're better off getting a new PS2 as the average repair cost is around £65. Lasers vary according to the version (there are 13 versions!).

If you decide to go in yourself, be careful, depending on the version you may find the reset / eject switch cables taped to the side or the inside top cover - if these get damaged its an extra cost again! In any eventuality, if you go inside yourself, any warranty becomes invalid.

We had the same problem and it became so bad we bought a new one. But then we discovered a repair guide. Most of these problems are due to a build up of dust. Best way to clean it is to very carefully remove the screws on the bottom of the console(remembering what goes where) and then gently give it a clean. This should help. If not then it is more technical and it involves adjusting the angle the disc is read at or somtimes the voltage!

Are they DVD disks?

My PS2 wouldn't read DVD's, I contact Sony and they replaced the unit with a new one (my PS2 was nearly 2 years old at the time). However, only a certain batch of PS2's did this so they may not replace yours if it is not one of these batches.

Sony were very helpful with my problems so it may be worth giving them a call.

People at EB games said that if you play DVD's regularly with the PS2 it grounds out the laser (yes, something designed to play DVD's suicides- counterintuitive!)

They said there's nothing to be done except get a new one, and play dvd's on a separate machine.

hi i used to have this problem and i asked a man who works in a gameshop and he said the fan at the back of the playstation can become clogged up with dust so give it a hoover dont worry nothing will come out its all secured in. or even give it a good blow lol. and he also advised me not to place a console flat on the floor. i used to have to play my games by standing my machine on its side that was the only way it could read my discs. good luck!

have you tried putting your ps2 down on the ground flat as opposed to to side-on. this sometimes helps.
