dial up uses the same phone line as you do when you talk. It converts the digital signal from the computer into sounds. Because of the filters and distance involved in the phone system to the Central office, the 'speed limit' of dial up is ~50kps. Broadband (DSL, Cable, etc) use a different technology. DSL has a distance limit but the technology uses all DIGITAL signals (so there's no conversion) and thus a much higher speed.
Cable uses a bigger bandwidth and thus can transmit more data at the same time.

Endline:
it takes a yr and a half for dial up to load and
1.2 seconds for broadband to load up
Technically:
Dialup works with a modem with 56k speed so its slow
and broadband works with ADSL or cable with no such speed limitations and can provide much higher speeds like 16 mbps.

Dialup connection is through telephone lines. Broadband is through cable network.
In dialup the download speed is 28kbps. Broadband speed is much higher depending upon the cable network used.

In layman's term: -
Dial up is using analog (sound wave) line while broadband is using digital (0101) signal.
Dial up using phone line, so once you connect to internet you can use the phone line to make calls and receive calls.
Hope answer your question.
