I'm doing online school and was wondering why they are used?

They are used for determining your GPA.
If you had a 3 credit hour class, and you got a 4.0 in the class, you would receive 12 honor points.
Now, let's say you had a 4 credit hour class, and got a 3.0 in it. That would mean 12 honor points again.

Now you divide the number of honor points by the number of credit hours taken, and that gives you your GPA.

24/7 = 3.43
