a large truck and a car collide movin' with same velocity and come to a halt in 1s[no external force actin']
is this possible

Andie, I'm thinkin' this is a trick question. After all, the meanin' of same velocity is same speed and direction, and in that case, how could they be collidin'?

Depends on how much larger the truck is from the car; if you're talking about a regular pickup truck with a standard cab and bed and a standard sedan, then yes, because the friction of the roadway when dry is probably enough to offset any difference in momentum due to the higher mass of the truck, especially when you also take into account the fact that modern cars and trucks have more crumple zones, and the bending of parts of the frame and sides can absorb some of the shock of the collision, slowing both vehicles down.

If, however, you're talking about, say, an 18-wheel big rig and a Yugo, then unless the two vehicles are both travelling 1 mph, the answer would be no -- the big truck would have more momentum due to its mass and want to keep going, and the car simply wouldn't have enough to stop its motion.

External force has to act otherwise this is impossible, provided the system remains constant and well defined.

1) collusion is elastic: The final result wont be that both are at rest.
2) collusion is inellastic: Then car and truck would get deformed in shape. This means that deaccelaration worked for sometime be4 they came to halt.

.......And friction is an external force.

Truck is usually much heavier than car.So it is not possible to stop in 1 sec when collide unless both are moving very very slowly so that they don't have much momenton and inertia.
