Marr and Butler definitely deserve an honourable mention but it's John Squire for me.

Well let's not forget.... Tom Verlaine from Television - Marquee Moon has the most fantastic guitar playing of the punk era when guitar solos were not at all popular.
Joey Santiago from Pixies- everyone mentions their quiet/loud dynamic but no one seems to remember how startling they were, partly due to Black Francis's unique lyrics/vocal style but also because their guitar's sounded like nothing else around.
Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine, Isn't Anything & Loveless are as influential to guitar bands of the last 15 years as almost anything else you could name.
Honourable mention also has to go to J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr
