Good question. It may just be a natural reflex. Like crossing your legs when you have to pee or covering your mouth when you see something shocking.

Nah it's just sorta internationally recognised as a gesture that's the same as asking the other person "What's the time?" And partly because we wear watches on our wrists. Well uh as for asking where the loo is, I think we need some more decent stuff rather than you know what. =)

Once, men carried pocketwatches and considered newfangled wristwatches to be effeminate and delicate, but, in the 1920's, wristwatches became more popular than pocketwatches. By now, few people carry pocketwatches, and it is so well-known that one wears a watch on his wrist that it became a habit to point to the watch. The two things you mention are not the same. There are no taboos or vulgar connotations about watches.
