I am 50 years old and fell on my hands, they are bruised between the thumb and first finger. I want them to get better as soon as possible. When I cut or open jars etc it does hurt. Should I avoid heavy work until they heal. Or will they heal regardless of what I do.

If you can easily see the bruising (i.e. not in a certain light), you there may be some more serious damage than bruising and you may want to check that out with the doctor.

If they are bruised only, the sensitivity will stop in about 2 days. As long as you can handle the pain when you do those things, you can keep doing it.

But if it's such extreme pain that you might yell out, I'd suggest seeing the doctor to make sure nothing else is wrong.

If their bruised as you say, then you might want to put some ice on them, wrap an ice pack in a hand towel one time, place it on your hand for 20 minutes, then back in the freezer for 40, and so on. Not sure if you've possibly broken a bone in your hand, that does happen. I would definately stay away from opening jars or anything that will be a strain on it until the pain has subsided. If it doesn't go away within a week, definately consult a physician just in case you have fractured something in there.

You would want to be sure you only sprained your hand and didn't break any bones of course . Other wise light use will help work out the muscles and stiffness . Hot soaks will increase blood flow to area and take some asprinin or ibuprofen during the day and at bedtime to decrease the inflammation.

Usage won't help.
Diminished pain will tell you when.
You can soak your hand in warm water and Epsom Salts.
