Perhaps you mean "Haunted" (1995), it's about an author who writes books that exposes false spiritualists and mediums, he is invited to stay in an old mansion by a an old lady's nephew who lives with her, his brother and sisters the old lady keeps seeing things. He is supposed to prove it is all in her mind.
It stars Aiden Quinn and Kate Beckinsdale.
Or there is "The Haunting" (1999) where a group of people take part in a sleep study to find out if an old mansion really is haunted; staring Catherine Zeta Jones, Liam Neeson, Lili Taylor and Owen Wilson.

Heart and Soul. People in a car/bus accident are ghosts sent to protect him. Or maybe it's Chances Are. He's not a ghost but he is the reincarnation of his girlfriend's father.

It is Heart and Souls...There are 4 people on a bus. When the bus wrecks, they get killed and their spirits attach themselves to him.
Eventually he blocks them out of his mind, but as an adult they appear because they have to use him to complete something they missed doing in their life.
