Village Idiot pretty much nailed it. Most of them want attention, some do it to jerk people around and some have a fetsih or wish they were women. One of my friends did it to try to become 'friends' with his at-the-time girlfriend. They became online pals and she started telling her 'new friend' some secrets. The crap hit the fan and they broke up but that is a rare instance when a guy is willing to go that far to see if a GF is cheating.

Probably for the same reasons that girls go on line pretending to be guys. And adults go on line pretending to be kids. And kids go on line pretending to be adults.
No one is themselves. Anyone can be anything else.
