The computer -- it has really changed our day-to-day lives. You can argue either way to weather the changes are positive or negative.

Language and linguistics- the ability to encode information. That led to the development of so many other essential tools. Electricity and fire were discoveries, not inventions.
The wheel is a pretty important invention, too, but I don't think we'd have been able to develop it without language.
Indoor plumbing has made a lot of modern life possible, but I can't be sure from one day to the next if modern life is a great thing or a horrible disaster.
I'm going with communication.

I'll go with the wheel. The answer that says it should be "language" is very good, but language wasn't an invention. You can't have an inventor saying "Let's have . . . LANGUAGE!" until he has a language to say it in or think it in. Language just evolved, but the wheel was invented. And fire is important too, but it occurred naturally from lightning strikes in forests.

The wheel, so many other great inventions never would have come to be without the wheel first being invented.

Gotta be the wheel. It helped every one in every way and wasn't invented for money either, but survival as a convienance.

I believe most would possibly point to something electronic. Perhaps the computer for the usage we can get out of all its forms in one day, to make life easier perhaps.
Or even T.V, that we might not be blinded by the environment around us, but to see other parts of the world without going there. But for myself, it is the printer, with out it, i wouldn't have my Bible ;)
