If you have checked with a lawyer and they say you have no recourse. Pay the bill and write it off as a costly lesson. Learn from the experience. Move on. *LOL* And dont 'loan' that person anything else. Also spread the word amoung their friends.

Your only legal action would be to go to a small claims court or U.K. equivalent and sue under breach of an oral agreement. You should be advised that the burden of proof will be on you. Even if you have witnesses that testify that your "friend" broke the agreement, you have very little chance of winning.

If this acquaintance is still a friend, you may wish to see if an alternate arrangement can be made. Perhaps he can buy a few rounds of drinks or otherwise work off the debt.

I agree, a civil action in small claims court is an option in the U.S.-look into it where you are. However, responsibility may be hard to prove as there was no written agreement. It'll be your word against his, and that's always difficult. Good luck to you.

Do you have anything like Small Claims Court? We have that in the USA for taking legal action for small amounts (less than $5,000 dollars).

Don't get mad get even, slash his tires, dirty dog, they shouldn't be allowed to walk around with bill paying people. Have a friend break his arm or leg or both. Make it cost him...
