OH MY. what a SATISFACTORY question. i think that PERHAPS the answer that you are SEARCHING for LIES in the TRUTH of the BOTTOM of the ATLANTIC OCEAN where the ANCIANT ARTIFACTS lie, hoping, somehow, for a desparate FISH to come up to the SURFACE.

Four in total because we decent from animals that only needed legs to walk on. A four-legged animal evolves easier than a two-legged one as it is more difficult to keep balance on two legs. Six legs like an insects might be an option but that's somewhat vasty.

Science does not have a clear answer to why we walk on two legs rather than four. Some would say that walking on two legs uses less energy than four legs. Some would say that you look more impressive when you stand erect so you can scare your enemies away. Some would say you have a better view with your head elevated 150-180 cm above the ground. Some would say that humans evolved that way to free the hands for other purposes, like carrying children (after we lost our fur the children couldn't grip their mother's fur), carrying tools, fighting, talking in sign language, picking berries, building shelter, whatever.

Well, we have two of each because, like most (if not all) higher multi-cell organisms, we're bilaterally symmetrical, meaning one side is a mirror image of the other.

As to why we have arms AND legs, like all terrestrial vertebrates, we have four appendages. (Strict creationists may wish to stop reading now and go make some Kool-Aid®.) Somewhere along the line, some of our ancestors discovered that standing upright allowed for greater mobility than crawling around on all fours, and the whole bipedal thing stuck. Our former front legs are also quite useful as arms, giving us the ability to do innumerably more things with them than simply motivate.

Probably because that gives us the best balance and mobility without overloading our brains with excessive input from too many limbs. Most animals evolved in ways which specifically allows them to perform their best at whatever it is they do. Most mammals have four limbs, humans just happen to have two arms and legs instead of four legs.
Or, if you believe Creationism, that is just how God made us.

2 legs so that we can walk and 2 arms so that 1 can hold the fork and the other the spoon

Four appendages are not abnormal in the animal world. Actually ALL vertebrates have 4 appendages, or at least remnants of them. Frogs, lizards, Dinosaurs, birds, dogs, apes, etc.

We have a type of makeup called "Bilateral Symmetry". All the higher animals have that. Animals like jellyfish have radial symmetry, meaning circular. Bilateral is very functional for organisms.

??Damn....SOMEbody went NUTS with the thumbs-down. Probably some religious fruitcake!

It depends on whether you're religious or not....It seems however you want the scientific theory. Science says we've evolved to our current state and it's the most practical design to cator for how we live our lives. Animals adapt to their surroundings, hence why we ended up with opposable thumbs. If you're after the religious reasoning, apparently God made us in his image or something, to be honest I don't know anything about it as I'm not a religious person (sorry if i've offended any Christians/Muslims/Anyone else that takes offence).

You have two arms so that you can wash dishes. You have two legs so that you can spread them for your husband.

Because we can live without both. I wonder why we were created with two everything we can live without ie; legs, ears, eyes, but only given 1 of what we cant live without ie; brain, stomach, heart, mouth,

It is because we can not depend on one thing...it must be a partner so that anything will complete. But too much will make it more complicated and crowded and also maybe it is useless..
