In a speech Tuesday, the pope quoted from a book recounting a conversation between 14th century Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and an educated Persian on the truths of Islam and Christianity.

"The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war," the pope said.

"He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."'

He did not say anything 'bad'! All he did, in the context of an academic lecture, was quote the recorded words of a Christian emperor who held a debate with a prominent Muslim scholar in the 14th Century.

I am not a religious person, so have no axe to grind in defence of any faith - but if historical references can not be used when discussing the effects of religion on modern life, then what hope is there of rational debate about the current conflicts and misunderstandings between Islamic and non Islamic nations.

It's ironic that religious and governing figures in the 14th Century were able to hold sensible debate whereas today's equivalents seem to be bent on destroying people and countries.

And, as always, it's the ordinary citizen who suffers the most from the actions of zealots and fanatics.

Evil and Inhumane!
Is what I read he said.

I however think that its the same case with any faith you get a couple of people to be the bad seed and do evil and inhumane acts and justify it by saying it is gods will. Just a twisted side of the faith.

What ever he said, all you have to know is he is sorry about it because he blindly said something which he shouldn't have.
