you call home and they have an extra key fob (clicker thing) and they hold it up to a cell phone and you put your cell phone on speakerphone and hold it close to your car, it will open????

Not true - mobile telephones cut out sound frequencies you cant hear as they are not needed and would take extra up bandwidth (pritty much the same princaple as internet bandwidth) - this means a better sound quality can be transmitted using less space (its been compressed).
Its the sound frequencies you cant hear that the car keys transmi on.

No. Keep an extra key in your wallet. My smart uncle taught me that, after I stranded myself in the snow ... in the mountains ... on Christmas eve. (Try finding a tow truck then. Ha.)

PS Brother-in-law saved husband (then boyfriend) and me. He had to get extra key from my mom and drive 1 1/2 hours to help us. We were so happy once we got the heater on.

My father used to always lock his keys in his vehicle, that one day when my grandmother locked hers in, the car was also running! My dad had a field day with this!

No, you need to have the thing there because it goes by sensors, otherwise people could open eachother's car when they unlocked theirs.
