There is a slight difference between an intellectual and an intelligent person. A person will be considered as intelligent if he has a good know how about everyday and practical matters. An intellectual person on the other hand is more idealistic and theoretical.

The question was about intellectuals. Intelligence and Intellectual are NOT the same thing. Most intelligent people don't think of themselves as intellectuals.
