In our family we have Four birthdays on three successive days in November (9 months after valentines day, and one pair of twins). I have the third birthday, and we still have leftover cake (If you can call cake a leftover!). So each year I request a birthday pie (I like pie better than cake anyway). The ladies in my household are great bakers, and almost always agree. A pie can have a nice large flat surface (two crusted pies can, anyway) that can hold candles and can take a little carving for decoration.
Works for us!

My brother nor I were either one cake fans. So my mom would make my brother banana pudding for his birthday and a blackberry pie or cobbler for mine.
