It is a throwback to our caveman days - when procreation was the major goal in a very short life. Physically appearing strong, healthy and attractive - survival of the fittest. It has evolved into what it is today, initial impressions are largely on appearance (including grooming, dress, etc.). Unfortunate as it is in some cases, it is true.

I think that it is generally because the first encounter with a person is generally through sight so naturally you are going to jump to some conclusions about the person based on the info your eyes have obtained and what you already know from past experience. I would say that generally I don't pay too much attention to my initial impressions of people because although they are usually very strong, I find that they are almost always wrong.
In another respect imagine if you were to get to know someone over the phone before meeting them and you started to fancy them. I bet that your mind would start to tell you that they were an attractive person and then if you were to meet them and they were not, how would that alter your perspective of them. It is different for different people I would say. Some people are obviously more shallow than others but I think you are kidding your self if you say you don't judge based on looks because it is an instinctive reaction.

Because they don't know that appearance could be deceptive and that not all that glitters is gold. Moreover, a big garment does not make a big personality. However, it is a universal fact that the first impression counts a lot. How one looks greatly affects this first (and even subsequent) impression until the time comes when the true man behind the mask is revealed. To be on the safe side, never judge a person by his/her look alone; probe further.

We all make extrapolations and fill in missing information on a person or anything based on our past knowledge and experience.
When we look at people we see an image. That image represents something to us, as we will associate it with something we have experienced or seen in the past. We put things in boxes, because it helps our understanding of the world.
When you stop allowing what you see to affect how you judge things, you start to realise how upside down and inside out the world really can be sometimes. What glitters is not always gold, and what you see is not what you get!
It would be a fool who judges other people on how they look. There are a lot of fools in the world!
How many blind people do you know? Have you walked in the footsteps of a blind man/woman and seen what they see?

The theory that I find most satisfying is that based upon the biology of behavior which says that humans are driven by the desire to reproduce successfully and produce the healthiest and most likely to survive children to continue the process to pass on successful genes from generation to generation. This basically means that mammals and other creatures, humans included, judge potential mates on their appearance and behavior, instinctively deciding if the person will produce healthy successful offspring. In women, those physical and behavioral characteristics associated with producing healthy children is what men seem to judge them on.

If you are asking about fashion, then what you wear follows what you like and then people judge that. If you are talking about what physical features you have then alot of people give a primary judgement which tends to be reviewed on a moment by moment basis depending on how you behave. (lol, that goes for fashion as well i guess). It is human nature to categorise and departmentalise, these is just an extent ion of that part of us. However saying that, on here we can only judge people by what they say, and unfortunately there are some sick, mean and twisted individuals here, here they cant hide behind what they look like.

People who tend to judge others on how they look usually are insecure about their own looks and personality. If someone is completely secure with themselves then they don't feel the need to judge others.
Basically if someone judges how you look or act-it's because they need something to validate that they are better than you and to give them a self esteem boost- because they aren't secure with themsleves.
.............and of course some people are just mean.lol

Because first impressions last the longest.
If you go on a job interview, you always try to look your best because you know that you are being evaluated by your appearance and demeanor. This is the impression that stays with the interviewer the most and they will take that into consideration if they hire you because you will be representing their company.
Our Society is kind of set up that way where appearances count. This is just the way it is. Not that we have to accept it, but it does permeate our society in every way.

Because we want to let people know that we are better than that person, by judging others
Though people cannot see through our heart. Only God can. So it's only God who can judge. We are not supposed to judge

Because we live in a world where looks mean everything and nobody can be bothered to take time to get to know what people are really like. To this world, if you look or act a certain way you get put in to a social group, terrible but true, and et no-one is willing to change their attitude
