I were..
Can you be invisible?
If no, the answer is the answer above

It's a situation that may possibly occur, so the correct phrase is "If I were..."

You'd use it the same way for any other possible event, such as "If I were going to the store, what would you want me to get?"

If at some point you had been invisible, you'd say "I was invisible."

If I were... The first Subjunctive.

I have a BA in English, a kind of MA in American...ese, a CNN on my TV, a cat, a dog whose tail is just normal, a broken nail, two dirty plates and a new pain in my neck. I think I am qualified enough to answer this question.

Now, seriously:
1. Spoken English - "If I was you..."
2. Standard English - "If I were you..." (extension - "If I had been you I wouldn't have done that." - Past)
3. Realistic English - "I am not you, so, why would I care?"

The correct version is: " I were..." If you are conveying anything that is untrue, impossible then you always want to use "I were." Like, "If I were an eagle..."

The status (true or false, possible or impossible) has nothing to do with it.

If I were at the shops...
If I were answering this question...

Use "were" in this situation or in any situation where you are proposing a situation that is either impossible or untrue, i.e., If I were rich.
