I already formatted my hard drive b/c I had a trojan. I also thought if I backed up most of my files maybe my computer would stop overheating because I was using 70 GB of an 80GB laptop. It continues to get overly hot and I haven't even installed my programs yet. Is there anyway to keep it from overheating or to cool it down? I've tried laptop coolers and all they do is make the computer get hotter - right now I have it sitting on top of an old weight scale that has a lot of space under it. But it sucks because I cannot even put my computer on my lap or on a table without it being on top of something. Please help.

My old HP did that as well as my current Toshiba. More that likely it is the coils. They collect dust and that causes the computer not to be able to cool down correctly. I took my laptop apart and cleaned them myself. But I'm sure any computer repair place could do it. You could also try compressed air first and blow into the back of the computer to see if that helps.

Some HP and Compaq laptops with the lithium-ion batteries are having a problem with this. See the link below for an article about this, and possibly how to get a free replacement battery.

Better check out the BATTERY RECALL that was made for a lot of laptops recently. The batteries are overheating and catching fire. Most certainly, be careful with it.

the amount of HD being used will not effect the temp of a laptop or a pc. have you checked if your fan is working inside the laptop.
they also make a wide variety of laptop tables some of them have fans built on to them. you might want to try something like that. good luck
