Vietnam war was started by a Demonrat and ended by a Republican.

Democrats did not used to be crazy - but considering the way the Democratic party is now, I agree, absolutely nuts. So, good question.

Because:
1) The spitting on returning soldiers was not the defining experience for most vets. Getting shot at made a more lasting impression.
2) The liberals in fact were the ones that got them home from a war that they did not want to be fighting. Just because it was a Republican that ended the war, don't try to foll anyone into thinking it wasn't because of pressure from liberals in the country.
3) The experience of fighting in an unjust war shows them the obvious errors of the current Republican administration.
Those would be the key reasons that are specific to being a vet. Obviously the reasons that anyone else votes Democrat will factor in for any vet that cares about anything in their life beyond their vet status (which is most).

That is very hard to understand why a Vietnam Veteran
would do that, unless he was part of Hanoi Kerry's
Vietnam Veterans against the War of which over 2/3 of
these SOBs were never in Vietnam or the military.

It is inexcusable to spit on our vets. At the same time, if your values and beliefs currently coincide with the Democratic party, why would you not vote for them 35 years after the incident?

Probably got burned by being drafted for Vietnam and seen lots of buddies die. If he is against the war, I would imagine he would not vote for those who are creating or sponsoring another war in which we have no business.
Pay attention to the lyrics of Born in the USA, Bruce Springstein, you may be surprised.

Because he would realize that the reason that the liberals were pissed off at the vietnam vets were brainwashed by the media of the time.
