I have not had a kidney stone, but here is what I found on the web about symptoms:
What are the symptoms?
Kidney stones often do not cause any symptoms. Usually, the first symptom of a kidney stone is extreme pain, which occurs when a stone acutely blocks the flow of urine. The pain often begins suddenly when a stone moves in the urinary tract, causing irritation or blockage. Typically, a person feels a sharp, cramping pain in the back and side in the area of the kidney or in the lower abdomen. Sometimes nausea and vomiting occur. Later, pain may spread to the groin.
If the stone is too large to pass easily, pain continues as the muscles in the wall of the tiny ureter try to squeeze the stone along into the bladder. As a stone grows or moves, blood may appear in the urine. As the stone moves down the ureter closer to the bladder, you may feel the need to urinate more often or feel a burning sensation during urination.
If fever and chills accompany any of these symptoms, an infection may be present. In this case, you should contact a doctor immediately.

Women have told me it is worse than having a baby, I can only speak from my own experience, I was shot in the stomach and it was less painful than the kidney stone! Symptoms, really depend on how big the blockage is, with me you feel a pain in the right side of your back and it doesn't go away, within 20 minutes I was in the John really sick, then the ambulance to the hospital, now I have found out at the 1st sign of the pain start drinking as much water as you can and take a pain pill and pray you pass it, I don't envy you, will keep you in my prayers. Hopefully you will be OK! Something else I found out, mine was from drinking Gator Aid, which I have since stopped and been stone free, but you can get it from many things milk, chocolate etc!

My husband did. He got nauseous from the pain, there was a sharp shooting pain in his back and sometimes in the front. The pain would actually double him over at times. They say it's the worst pain you can experience after child birth. He was misdiagnosed at first, then the next ER he went to did a CT scan of his kidneys and they spotted it. If it's small enough to pass they will just have you wait until it does, then they'll probably do this urinary study of you, where you collect your urine for 24 hours, I know, it's gross. If the stone is too big they will break it up with a laser so you can pass it, or they will surgically remove it. Try drinking lots of water, and I just read that people who regularly consume lemon-ade tend to not get kidney stones. Good Luck.

I haven't had one myself but experienced my husband's EXTREMELY painful ordeal. At first, he felt a lot of pressure as if he had to have a bowel movement but the pain became extreme. He had a lot of blood in his urine (doctors said he was passing the stones). I rushed him to the ER and nothing would calm the pain except a morphine drip! Women who have had children and also experienced kidney stones say that the pain from the stones is worse than labor!

I haven't experienced one yet (knock on wood) but my father did twice. It gives you a piercing pain in your side towards your back. We thought he had appendicitis (excuse my spelling) He could not sit, lay down, or stand still. The doctor was following him around the room trying to examine him. You will feel horrible pain as it moves. It has spikes all around the stones that will poke and cut you as it moves. You may experience a little blood in your urine also.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
