Refs are actually told not to break up the fights until either they fall on the ice, or both the fighters are tired out. This is to insure the safety of the refs. If they were to break it up during the fight, there is a good chance that they may get hit.

Also, the two players are guaranteed to fight eventually. Not breaking it up, allows them to just get it over with, so the game can continue smoothly afterwards.

Cause the refs don't want to end up being on the receiving end of the hits. Also, a fight is not a fight until it's broken out. So for the ref to call a penalty and decide it's 5 minutes for fighting, or just rouging, the fight has to take place. 2 guys squaring up is not a fight. 1 guy roughing someone up is not a fight and most likely will get a 2 or 4 minute roughing penalty.

Probably to increase the entertainment value, sadly. The other reason might be that it takes a certain amount of time to get in the middle of the fight & stop it - but I'm not much of a hockey fan, so I can't say I've ever seen this happening.

most of the time its cause they get tired once they fall to the ice, but seriously if you don't like the fighting then don't watch it, its part of the game we can fight in hockey. allot of times fights are started cause a player is bugging the other teams top player or a tough guy on your team will try to start a fight to get his team going after being down in the score and it helps to pump up your team, see there are reasons of fighting also. sometimes players just hate each other so much and really want a peace of each other.

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

Its like a pressure release valve, many player have been know to fight and go for beers after and laugh about it it sometimes happen on the same team or in training camp.

Also the ref don't want to get hurt but if tthey have an oppertunity to stop it they will.

Hockey players are left to fight because that is what the fans want, often players are told to cause fights in order to get bonuses as it raises viewing figures. Unethical but a dark part of the game.

I've never seen a hockey fight.

Happens a lot in ice hockey, though.

The refs don't want to get between two 6'3", 225 lb men trying to beat the crap out of each other. Would you?

Same reason as why you would be reluctant to break up a fight between two pitbulls: you could get hurt.
