John Wayne is a deep sea diver who, while diving on a shipwreck, discovers the body of a woman who stowed away on the vessel. We never actually see the body, only her shawl waving in the current from the box she was hiding in.
I thought perhaps this was the movie WAKE OF THE RED WITCH in which John Wayne is also a sea captain and diver but this film has a completely different plot.

i know this movie. maybe Sea Hawk i am not sure of the name. she stowed away to be with the man she loved. i think he blew up the ship. he did not know that she was on the ship.the woman also had a sister and their father was govenour of the island. i think ray milland was also in this movie and played the woman's lover.i think the woman is played by susan howard. susan howard is the cousin not the sister.
i know think the name of the movie is Reap the Wild Wind- 1942

yep, Wake of the Red Witch......I believe this was one of 7 or 8 movies that John Wayne's character died.

Been right through his filmography on IMDb and don't see anything resembling that plot.
Sure made a lot of films didn't he.
Maybe you're getting him confused with someone else.
