No my husband builds transmission's for a living and when I learned how to drive a standard transmission I worried about the same thing. He told me not to worry that I couldn't hurt the transmission but that I could possibly damage the clutch ( about $ 100 not including labor) If in the event that you do break it an easy test to see if it is the transmission or clutch is to turn off the motor and run it through the gears if it will go into all the gears then your transmission is ok. If it won't go into any or a few gears your more than likely needing tranmission work.

The most I would worry about a new driver in a stickshift... if you are constantly stalling this may not be a problem ^_^ But don't ride the clutch or you can burn it out! Other than that, no extensive damage can be done and it is quite cheap to get a factory clutch put back in!

Constant stalling wont hurt the car...just your pride. However with the stickshift the biggest loser for a new driver is the clutch. You may burn it out. After you get comfy with the car, make sure you get that checked and also get your gear drive chain re-greased.
