why do they put blue bags over the bananas at a banana farm?

bugs, sunburn, monkeys?

bugs. there is a certain species of fly that'll lay eggs in the bananas. to prevent this from happening, they spray the bananas first and then put the bags over them to really concentrate the insecticide.

Many growers treat bananas with ethylene gas. It helps the banana to ripen more quickly. Ethylene gas is a naturally occuring gas that is also given off by bananas (why some people put a banana in a bag with fruit they want to ripen). The bags not only keep bugs off, they hold the gas around the bananas.
