What's your budget?

$$$$ - You can live it up and stay either at the St. Francis (Unios Square), the Ritz Carlton (they serve traditional afternoon tea), the Mark Hopkins (Top of the Hill, California Street), or even at the Grand Hyatt (one block off of Union Square).

$$$ - Hotel Vitale (near the Embarcadero/Ferry Plaza, a nice place), or try any of the Kimpton Hotels (Hotel Monaco, Hotel Palomar, Sir Francis Drake Hotel). Hotel Griffon, on King Street between the Embarcadero and the AT&T baseball park.

$$ - Hotel Del Sol (Marina/Cow Hollow), Seal Rock Inn (by Ocean Beach, if you get a corner room you'll have a nice view of the ocean), Presidio Travelodge. There are a lot of smaller hotels and motels along Lombard, which is somewhat near the Golden Gate Bridge. I'm not too familiar with these hotels.

I would stay away from the Tenderloin district, Bayview/Hunter's Point, or along the red-light district on Broadway at night.

Otherwise, it is mostly safe, and lots of things to do/eat. Have fun!

SF is a safe city so long as you stay in and around the usual tourist areas: the piers and embarcadero, central businsess district, theater area. So any hotel that indicates it is in or around an area a tourist would be interested in would be fine.

Any area like the so-called Tenderloin, which houses most of SF's porn shops and sleezy bars, should be avoided...by anyone, including two Brits.

Choose an internationally known hotel (e.g., Hilton, Marriot, Holiday Inn) in a tourist area and you'll be fine. Brits are our first cousins and we'll treat you like family in and around San Francisco.

I travel there a couple of times a year. Usually I stay around the Union Square area. Any of the major hotels in that area are very safe, as long as you don't walk down side alleys by yourself late at night.

The Clift Hotel is beautiful. There is an Asia de Cuba restaurant inside.

I would also recommend any of the Kimpton hotels. There are about 3 of them in the union square area.

I live in SJ (about 50 miles south) and visit SF frequently. It's a very safe city. You want to avoid the Tenderloin-area, but pretty much any place else will be safe.

As long as you stay in a decent hotel in a tourist neighborhood, you should be fine. Americans don't hate the British, no one is going to mug you for just that.
