Get a few glue traps and lay them along the edge of the room (where the floor and wall meet). Mice and rats prefer to run there instead of in the middle of the room. Mice will sometimes crawl into the engine and work themselves into the heating ducts of a car. Nothing like driving along and seeing a mouse run out.

Put out two or three mothballs in the corners or other out of the way areas where children and pets can't get them. Don't use so many that you can smell them, but a few will keep lots of different critters away, including snakes.
