We call them ground hornets. The only way I have been able to get rid of them is by pouring gas down the hole. Carefully watch to see where they go in & out of the ground. They will have a "front" door and a "back" door. Try to cover one hole while you gas the other, then swap holes. Light it if you want to but with a long stick from a good distance or you might lose some hair.

I'm not really sure, but my first guess is bumble bees. If it is a bumblebee they will not try to sting you because they will die if they do.
About yellow jackets (mentioned by IAINTELLEN)...
1) They are small.
2) Colors are yellow w/ brown stripes
3) They are a type of wasp, not a hornet. A hornet is bigger, red, with black wings.
4) They make paper nests above ground wherever they can find a place that isn't disturbed often.

Yellow jackets... usually you have to wait until evening when they are all in there to exterminate the hive. Call an exterminator. They have a pressurized tank they can spray all the way into the nest to get rid of them fast. I would do this as soon as possible, because if someone steps on the nest and angers them, they will chase and attack.

They're not bees. They're yellow jackets. A type of hornet. Bumble bees like low nests, but don't nest underground.

You are probably talking about wood bores. The look a lot like a bumble bee. Or it could be a bumble bee. The bees have stingers the wood bores do not.

those are yellow jackets. very mean. it's best to wait until winter when they hibernate then pour kerosene or diesel fuel in the hole. or if it's away from a building, pour gas in and light it.
