It was because the Mets purposely threw those games away so that they can give the naive met fan the clinching happy ending at Shea Stadium. Are you met fans that naive that you don't see the obvious? This Met season is fixed. It's so convinient they are having a good season on the 20th anniversary of them winning their last world series. Stop being so naive & see the obvious.

This just in...
Willie Randolph gets fired the day the Mets clinch. He gets replaced by the Cookie Monster. David Wright gets benched in favor of Snufulufugus. Pedro Martinez gets cut and the newest pitcher is Big Bird.

Even if the Mets did throw the games against the Pirates did Houston also throw all the games so the Mets could clinch at home? Highly doubtful! For someone who apparently hates the Mets, you sure do follow them a lot.

So the Mets have a chance to make the World Series again. Have you forgotten about the Subway Series in 2000? Did they fix that season also?

The Mets may not have all the top players in baseball but they do play like a team. It is not one great hitter or pitcher that wins a game, it is everyone. Face the music, the Mets can play together.

There is always more than one reason a team will win or lose three games in a row. Let's look at things form both perspectives.

From the mets side, they have been having some trouble dealing with left handed pitching, and the Pirates threw three lefty starters at them. Zach Duke had beat them last year at Shea in a start, and even thought he record may not indicate it, he is better than 10-13. The Mets also had a horrible time with runners in scoring position, and did nothing to help themselves with key hits. Beltran went 0 for the weekend, and without his bat being awake, cost the Mets innings.

From the Pirate standpoint, this was in many ways their World Series. Having no other shot to do much positive this year, they needed to make a stand and keep the mets form celebrating in their ball park.

They had the timely hits and good fiielding the Mets lacked this weekend. They also kept those met bats quiet, which is a huge key to any type of success, givn the strong nature of the met offense.

Also, the Pirates have been playing better as of late, winning 12 out of their last 18. It is all about baby steps for them.

BTW, the Mets were swpt in Boston in June...during that horribleness called interleague play.

There you have it, cogent and complete.

Scott in NY who roots for the Pirates, even if they stink

The 1927 Yankees, considered the greatest team of all time, lost three games in a row on June 25 and 26th (they got swept in a doubleheader on the 25th). They lost to the Philadelphia A's.

Anyone can lose three games in a row.

They even lost FOUR in a row that year (one to the White Sox, and then got swept three straight by the Indians). This occurred from 8/19 to 8/22.

The 1906 Chicago Cubs lost three in a row (to the Giants) in May of that year. The Cubs final record in 1906 was 116-36, the best record in history.

If the '27 Yankees and the '06 Cubs can lose three games in a row, so can the Mets.

Mets fans think they have it made just cuz they lead their division, I've said it b4 & i'll say it again, any given day, a good team will lose against a bad team. Mets fans, dont feel too confident, yes u will make the playoffs, but honestly I dont think u'll be going to the world series. All u have to do is win 1 game, & it still hasnt happened. this isnt something thats fixed, u have to give that up already, everyone was saying that the Mets would clinch with martinez on the mound, that didnt happen.

Dude, it's not a fixed season.

I'm a Yankees fan. Look at it this way... if it was fixed... then the Red Sox wouldn't have had to wait 86 years. The Cubs wouldn't still be waiting.

Major League Baseball and Bud Selig couldn't give a crap less about the Mets. They're winning because they've got a good team in a weak division, in a weak league.

They've got about $140M in payroll.

But they're paper champs... because they won't win in the playoffs with that pitching, and they won't beat an AL team even if they make it to the Worlds.

But drop the conspiracy theories. It's like listening to Ted Kennedy.

Any evidence of that would get the players involved lifetime bans from baseball. I don't think any player would risk that punishment just to give their hometown fans a slight joy.

Friday's game was lost because Pedro wasn't ready to pitch yet. The Pirates averaged 3.75 runs per game in the series - that isn't much. It was either (depending on your viewpoint) strong starting pitching by the Pirates or piss-poor hitting by the Metts.

Even the AAA Mets should've been able to win ONE game in Pittsburgh.

The pirates were the first team to sweep the mets all season and the Pirates aren't good.

They didn't lose on purpose, and they are not going to win the World Series, the American League is so much better, other than the Tigers, who stink now.

I really don't think it is a fix. What it is is lousy pitching and I am now worried they will lose a 3-game playoff with any team that has 3 good pitchers.
