My pc is really old, its still a pentium 1, windows 98 and 60mb ram..... and it doesnt even say how much Mhz its cpu has:s plus I dont know much about these things

I was thinkign of getting it to pentium 4, 516mb ram, 3GHz cpu, a very good norton anti-virus, a good cam and mic, GeForce Graphics card, a tft monitor, a new keyboard.

How much do u think that will cost me in dollars..... and would I be better off buying a brand new pc? oh and tell me what sound card should I be getting for intense sound.... if u can even buy those!

Those are pretty old hardware you are trying to get. I wouldn't pay more than 500, but that is only if the graphics card is new and the monitor was at least 17"

I think you should get a brand new computer, of course you need to think about what you are going to do with it first. Games?

Sounds like a lot of upgrading, but IMHO doing it is not worth the money.

A couple of things you really need to consider are:

(1) What are the capabilities of the Motherboard you have regarding RAM capabilities and the bus speed? Guess what, a Pentium 4 probably won't even fit your MoBo at all. And putting 512 MB or RAM in will most likely have to be accomplished by installing 2 each 256 RAM sticks.

(2) Will the power supply you have handle all the extra power requirements of the new hardware.

Just looking at the "upgrade" scenario you are talking about, I would opt for a completely new PC. The upgrades you are talking about are going to cost you pretty big dollars. If you're going to spend the dollars anyway, why not have a new PC for your money?

Yes, you're better off buying a new pc. Virtually none of the components from that old one have any value now, nor would they work smoothly with new components.

Check Dell online for prices. I don't think they are necessarily the best PC's for the money, but their prices are never terrible, and for people who don't know exactly what they're doing, you could do much, much worse elsewhere.

I consider 512 MB Ram insufficient in a modern machine - I've been buying 1 Gb for a while, I'd get 2 gb on a power machine. 1gB is probably fine for you, but I would definitely get 1 GB - even if it meant only a 2.5 gHz cpu.

There are the new AMD Dell systems out now that are dead cheap. You can get a sampron one for $279, and if you pay a bit more, you can get the dual cose with the spec you one for around $350.

Stop wasting your time trying to get your computer to do what you want. Get a Mac. They're secure, easy to use, easy to maintain, easy to expand, and things just work on a Mac.
