Is there a polite way of telling them to stop or do I have to start the whole stabbing trespassers in the face thing again.

Tell the buggers that what they desire is buried within your vegetable garden.
Give it a couple of hours then feel free to inflict gratuitous violence on their trespassing backsides once they've dug your garden over.
