i have worked with the SPCA for a long time.all of them are understaffed and work with little or no money at all. we need more volunteers and more donations however what we really need are for people to do the right thing by their pets spay or neuter them therefore eliminating unwanted puppies and kittens . currently in the shelter system there are 9 dogs for every person in the united states as well as 23 cats per person not enough homes for all of these animals that's the situation the shelters face everyday.. not to mention the amount of cruelty out there what Americans need to know is this an animal is not disposable when you get bored. puppies and kittens are cute when they are little but they grow up as with anything in life. would you get rid of your wayward child?think not why do it to your pet. theses are living breathing FEELING beings just like you and i. the difference is they can not speak and their life span is shorter. an animal however is and always will be LOYAL. something the human race should learn about. as far as improvement only the human race can do that but the question is will they?

More volunteers and support from the community. It would be great if desexing animals was made cheaper somehow ( I know the vets won't agree!!) so there were less 'accidental' and unwanted animals being bred. We have a no kill policy at our local shelter, which is awesome, but only works because of the fantastic support of the community. As shelters are all non profit, the community need to support them - even if its through donating old blankets or supporting fundraisers, like bbq's etc.

The things ALL of us can do to improve the situations in the shelters are 1.) Spay/neuter the pets we have. Not everybody needs to be a backyard breeder, just because they can. 2.)Stop buying pets at the pet stores. It encourages overproduction at the puppy/kitten/ferret farms and mills. Adopt!
3.) Think twice BEFORE getting any pet. They are a big responsibiliy which shouldn't be taken lightly. Pets bought on impulse end up in shelters a lot.

I work at a rescue, that is completely funded by the public. However the RSPCA centres get funding, and also get funded by the public. They only look after animals that come their way. They will only investigate somebody that they have had a complaint about.
Most other rescues, will investigate people they have seen and don't think they look after their animals properly, and investigate complaints.
I personally do not think much of the RSPCA as they have spent over 40,000, yes 40,000 on a new place and are now asking for funds. Due to this, a lady who has been running a very successful rescue for thirty years now has to close down, as everyone has read about the RSPCA in the paper and is donationg money to them instead.
Don't be fooled. They don't need it!

They are effective, but I think there needs to be more. We were trying to start up one, but fell short because of funding. There does need to be more governmental funding because alot of private citizens don't want to put up money to help. I think that they should check on these shelters just like they do daycares, a shelter owner would have to be licensed by the state and regulated.

If we kill more people on death row and take the money that we would have spent on them and put it good use in the animal shelters, there would not be any problems with the shelters any more.

They need a lot of public help and donations. I help support one by taking dog and cat food and cat litter to every month. I have adopted a couple of animals from them.
