I'm from California and I can tell you without a doubt that Hollywood, San Francisco and pretty much all of L.A. are your best bets. Surprisingly, Yosemite National park has a lot of gay/lesbian employees.
My sis ( she's lesb.) used to work there and she met dozens of girlfriends!

Anywhere that isn't a small hick town or deep in the southern states. Just about all US cities are gay tolerant. I'm from Baltimore, Maryland which isn't a big city at all and there are open homosexuals everywhere and nobody seems to care.

Over the years it's been my understanding that there is a large gay community in San Francisco. Good Luck !
