well I guess it was a long time ago.
When Shakespeare was writing, women were not allowed to act, therefore men had to play women's roles.
Also the Greeks and Romans wore dresses.
Lets face it, there have always been men who find some kind of thrill pretending to be a woman, weather the reason be of a sexual nature or just tom foolery, who knows
(and who cares, its just weird)

acting was long ago solely the profession of men , women were forbidden , so all female parts were played by men in drag .
