Her computer was ruined during last huracaine. She is 68 and doesn't know much about computers & not very inclined to learn much at this point but all her children and grandchildren live far away so she wants to keep in touch via e-mail. What is an economical and simple computer to handle? ( I want to make a smart purchasing without buying stuff she doesnt need nor will use) The only thing she will use it for is to receive and send e-mails and watch YouTube videos we make for her, and once in a while type a letter in word perfect. She'll freak out if it looks very complex. And I want to buy it for Christmas but budget is modest. Suggestions of brands and styles and online shops appreciated!

Dell's Inspiron B130 (laptop) or Dimension B110 (desktop) are good entry level machines. The B130 can usually be found for $479 and the B110 for $279. (You pay extra for the portability of a laptop.) The only drawback is RAM. Both start out at 256MB. But that can always be upgraded later on.

I bought another Dell this year, because I got a great deal. If you watch sites like gottadeal.com or techbargains.com you can catch coupon deals and save some more money. The coupon I used got me 41% off my total purchase.

I have also seen some awsome deals on e-machine computers on line.

Many manufacturers are or soon will offer coupons for a free upgrade to windows vista when it is released, something that may be a good idea.
