I think it was an accident. He loved animals - never forget the episode where he started crying on finding burnt snakes after a bushfire.

It was an accident, but no doubt the stingray felt threatened, otherwise he wouldn't have stung. Steve irwin was well aware of the risks he took, so I'm sure he wouldn't blame the stingray (like some 'fans' apparently have done).

Well if you actually took the time to do the research instead of ask unfounded questions you would realize that the police who viewed the evidence, being the footage said that Steve did not agitate or harass the stingray!!
His Manager also said that " Steve swum over the stingray and the barb came up hit him right here ( and he was gone )"
Was it also necessary to post this twice?

Yes I believe it was an accident. He would have never done anything to provoke a Stingray

Irwin may have provoked the stingray accidentally, leading to his death.

from all the various info out there i've seen steve did NOT provoke the stingray it was the cameraman it got scared of, steve was just in the wrong place at the right time for this tragedy to occur and even then if the barb hadn't hit him where it did he would of survived - it was just crappy luck it happens - like everyone he was going to die of something

I think it was a tragic accident and the stingray obviously felt threatened. He knew the risks involved at the end of the day and took that chance.

From what I understand, Irwin wasn't really doing anything. The photographer with him was filming the ray and was swimming straight at him for a shot. The ray was reacting to what it thought was an attack by the photographer. Irwin was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

oh please, have u ever dived with stingrays?? I have many times, they dont sting for no reason, they often come up and wrap u in their wings which can be quite scary when ur not used to it, but they do it when u have a catch bag attached full of fish so they want food, ive never had one turn its tail on me ever.
but they arent aggresive to humans at all, it was an ACCIDENT
