Hey there, I'm half Egyptian and have been there loads, and moving there next month for a year. I would say spend some time in Cairo to see it all, and then maybe off to the Sinai (via plane or overnight coach) to see Mount Sinai and St Catherines. Also spend some time at a Red Sea resort for diving, relaxing etc(NOT Na'ama bay), and then you can get a ferry over to Hurghada and then head to Aswan for Abu Simbel and then a Feluca back up North as far as you wish via Luxor. Then train it back to Cairo.

Get a package that combines three or four days in Cairo with a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan. If you get a chance take an extension to cruise from Aswan to Abu Simbel on Lake Nasser but only do this bit by boat. You can fly or go by road but you get a very short time at Abu Simbel and it's not worth it.
The Nile cruise will give you a chance to see different temples each day and is very relaxing but in a week you will only see a fraction of the sights and you will need to return.

A Nile cruise is a wonderful way to see all of the ancient temples
and historical sites. The ships are nice, the food is great and the people friendly. Cairo is amazing, be sure to visit the souks, the pyramids ( I recommend horseback, we went the back way through the desert at almost sundown and for a while the city faded away and you could imagine what it was long thousands of years ago. Alexandria too is beautiful, very crowded but the restored library is something worth seeing. Egypt is an amazing country to visit and my trip there is a time that I will always remember. Have fun.

I decided to do an organized tour. I am going 3 days early before the start of the tour and staying 3 days after to have some time for myself in Cairo. The trip includes alot of sites including 7 days cruising the Nile. After much research and since I am traveling alone I decided this was the best way to see the most things and learn about Egypt. www.getours.com
PS. Have some of you people ever heard of the saying, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all???? It floors me some of the things that are written here...most from people who have not ever even been there.

u got sooo many answers, anyway i wish u can enjoy your trip.
Cairo is big busy city, it is the capital and very crowded so u not need there more than 2 or 3 nights, it is really enough. then u can have cruie for 1 way only 3 nights or 4 nights, u not need take 7 nights in the boat, it is a bit boring as i hear from some of my guests and also staying at the boat not give u good chance to see the country and cites around. so u can have 4 night Lxr - Asw or 3 nights Asw - Lxr. then may be stay for 2 nights at hotel in luxor and then we can meet if you would like. i don't know how many days u wanna make your trip so is difcult to help like that way and actually there r a loooooot around to see and do so if you would like to have any more info don't hesitate to contact me back.

Go by plane to Cairo to spend some days...
Then fly to Aswan and stay in a nile cruise boat that takes you to Luxor passing by all the cities in the middle...
You'll really enjoy it, recommended in winter...

uh, do both? Where is your Nile Cruise from? Aswan to Luxor?
Anyway, I'd first spend time in Cairo and see the pyramids, islamic cairo, and old cairo then do your Nile Cruise.
For a bit more rough traveling you can take an old fashion boat called a feluca for one to two day trips from Aswan. You can also so take evening feluca trips in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan.
