not necessarily but if tere were two items the same, and it was something I wanted, I would probably go for the best packaging, especially if it was for a gift.

I immeaditely clicked on this question 'cos I know exactly what to say to this. In Primary school, about primary 5 I think this was in RE or Social but we were put into groups and sent to "the wet area" with a student teacher and she had a bag of presents that she emptied onto the table. Each of us was asked to choose a present from the pile. There were wery well decorated big fancy wrapped ones and small cardboard boxes with wrapping, now that we were in p5 you'd guess most of us grabbed the big fancy ones which did happen, not one of us choose the plain ones, they were chosen cos the fancy onces had been taken, I was one of the ones who grabbed the fancy looknig ones, us that took those ones found that once opened there was notihng inside it! The others, who had ended up with the plain ones found a packet of sweets. So it like teaches you a lesson. Good point I think.

No. As the old saying goes, never judge a book by it's cover, the same basic rule of thumb applies to anything else you may wish to buy. That beautifully pressed man's shirt you are looking at, looks good because it has a cardboard stiffener inside and is held together with about eight pins and plastic stiffeners are slipped inside the collar.

Perfumes are a classic example that we are all suckers.
A few drops of "essential ingredients" that cost next to nothing (measured in pence), dilute into about 100ml of alcohol or water, design a fancy bottle and a slick advertising campaign and you end up paying more than a typical family would have to survive on for a month in the "developing world" where the majority of essential ingredients are produced.
The money spent on the cosmetics industry in the US alone would probably pay for decent sanitation and water for everyone on the planet.

i'd like to think that i wouldn't buy a product just because the outside packaging is beautiful and has a nice presentation. unfortunately, i'm sure i've done several times without realizing it!

No, but a lot of people nowadays are influenced by marketing and fads rather than making sensible informed choices.

Most of it goes back to get recycled and only fills the bin quicker so why are they allowed to put the unneccesarry fancy crap on in the first place? . even things like giant boxes for ten plates of cornflakes. (roll eyes)

No, and no. Some of us are apparently either just Philistines or we can think for ourselves!
