pc cannot find the boot.ini file and is not loading my normal desktop settings. I have lost most of my icons. My pc no longer asks me to logon. I am running Windows 2000 professional. Would appreciate any help, thank you

If there is no data on your computer that you want to save, it is better to format and do a reinstallation. Alternatively you can take your hard disk out, and connect it to another computer as a slave disk, and copy your data, if any to another hard disk or to a cd/dvd. Later you can format the hard disk and do a new installation. For detail instruction of reinstallation look in the blog for windows reinstallation

You can't watch ur bootini file as u see all other files they r hidden in drive C for checking them u must first go to folder option and then go to view and then uncheck "hide system files"
option in that. Now u will be able to view that windows uses at startup.
Now check if these files r missing then copy the smae files from the another computer running with the same windows and ur problem will end next time u boot ur windows

a virus has "hidden" it. get an antivirus software
