An angle.
It is used by sailors to measure the angle between the sun and horizon, usually at noon, which gives the latitude, plus if you take repeatedly the measure you can know at what time the sun is higher, which gives the local noon, which gives the longitude.
Edit: I should say "it was used". Of course now everyone uses GPS...
