i have a 9 yr old - 4th grader who has/had the same problem. finally went to the teacher told her that as i am not the type to do it for her(i lied) she ends up spending way too long and getting frustrated at the amount . she is a good student in school but i cannot allow her to spend so long every night on homework. ect. i also told her that because of family obligations - not "playtime" she has limited time to do homework. for example for us we have a sheep farm. becky needs to help out with chores. bus lets her off at 4:00 , chores are 4:30 to 5:30 her dinner at 6:00 , her bath at 8:00 and bed at 9:00 . so she has limited time and it is unfair to penalize the child for un- done homework . anyway i think you get the idea. i can understand the need IF the child doesnt grasp the work ,but to consistantly give her so much work is not working for you as a family. - lay it out for the teacher. and if she insists that "this is what i have always given ect" then go directly to the school offical with the problem.

That is kinda weird. When I was in elementary school, I don't remember spending more than an hour a day on homework,.. of course, once in high school, that time was up to at least 4 hours or more each day. Some amount of homework teaches discipline, as well as whatever material it's over, but yes, 3 hours sounds a bit ridiculous for a 9 year old. Maybe it would help to have a tutor.

I agree that 3 hours a night plus weekends is too much for a 9 year old.
However, I can't agree with eliminating it completely. I have a 9 year old myself. I go over every bit of his homework with him every night. It helps me to see where he needs help with some extra practice. I also get a chance to explain something to him if he didn't get it the first time.
But there is a limit to how much a 9 year old can handle -- and 3 hours a night plus weekends is quite a bit beyond that limit.

Yeah I know, It isn't fun. At my school, we also have 3 hours of homework and on WEEKENDS plus projects and tests to study for, and thats just in middle school. So if a 9 yr old has the same amount of homework as a 13/14 yr old...that tells you something about the school systems that they have now. Yeah, the joys of homework...

Is this child having trouble with homework and that is making it take so long? My son is 9 and he has maybe an hour tops. May I ask what city and state the child lives in? And does the child attend a private school. I always get excited about my kids homework, he doesn't see it as a chore because I don't present it as one.

If one wants a nation that is capable of watching the Simpsons and believing everything they hear on the tv ... zero homework would be fine. If one wants a nation of young people able to read, write, and capable of simple math ... well with homework!
