Explain To Him That It's Not Real. Try Watching Funny Movies With Him.
Also, Your Idea About Showing Him A Film On How They Are Made Is An Excellent Idea. In Those Films They Show Step-By-Step, How The Make-Up Is Put On The Actors. That Should Help Alot.
He's 12, So Should Be Old Enough To Understand.

I took my step son around the whole house including the closets where he thought something was there and showed him nothing was there. I showed him once the door is locked, nothing can get in. After I locked the door, I took him around again. Now he just asks me before he goes to bed if the doors are locked. This seemed to work and there was no more problems.

Perhaps allow him to watch "the making the movie" section of the DVD. Sometimes if children see the work that goes into making things look scary they won't be so scared anymore. It may even ignite a spark to look into what make-up artists really do.

I let my niece watch Dawn of the Dead and she is 5! I think her mother wanted to kill me. When I asked a buddy of mine what I should do she suggested that I get my niece a flashlight. The kind that you dont need batteries for you just shake. (or you will be spending some serious cash)
Tell the kid that light kills dark...soon it will become a game in the kid's mind and they will be more concerned with playing "destroy the boogey man" with thier laser rather than being scared....hope it works for you.

You will need to give him a few weeks, then it'll slowly pass.
