Buy a good dtp software like pagemaker and a laser printer.Start reproducing any good magazine you come across by inserting text boxes , pictures , columns, changing fonts etc, etc. During the same time think about what subject you want to publish and collect all the required data and go ahead with it

Network with those in the profession. Don't just dream about it. Write down your goals and objectives to pursue your 'means to an end'. And monitor them weekly.
Start with the Yellow Pages in the phonebook & set up meetings, go visit them to press the flesh, make contact and look them in the eye! Good Luck.

Keep an eye out for job vacancies in your local newspaper. That's what I did - I work for a Scientific Publishers.
