The fable has become a reality, dear friend !
Take 1 square foot of cloth, cut it into 2 small and 1 large pieces, attach some straps, stitch some fancy patterns onto it, and just attach a 'Designer' label - and you've a one-of-a-kind bikini, that will sell for even $ 10,000/-, depending on the label.
Only, this craving for such ridiculously priced 'designer' clothing is not called 'daftness' - these days, it is labelled as 'good taste' !

Never heard of the Emporer's New Clothes but I agree that its stupid to pay high dollar for a little fabric jsut because its stylish and is 'in'. I follow that trend sometimes but only when its on sell and a lot cheeper.

The Emperor's new clothes is a story about people being conned because of their vanity and eagerness to be accepted as better than they actually are.
I think that it is becoming more and more apparent in this day and age

It's not just clothes they sell like that now, it's policies, war, and the general spin overdrive, we have actually been led to pay for people to tell us bad news like they are doing us a favour, happy days, life eh!
Don;t get me started on some of the overhyped rubbish music either (or is that my age), westlife anyone?

I think it was Germain Greer who made an interesting comment. It is becoming increasingly difficult for Young people to adopt a dress code that differentiates them from their parents generation. Jeans, T-shirts, trainers etc are no longer seen as signs of rebellion. 30 and 40 somethings dress pretty much the same as teens.
So displaying your body is the only recourse left. Showing firm breasts, flat stomachs and smooth legs is the only fashion statement left that says 'Look, I'm young, you're not, you're not!'
I think there's a lot in that.

I think it's becoming more pertinent in a literal and a metaphorical sense. I feel like there are more and more sheeple every day. Of course sometimes it's not fear of simply being different or ridiculued that makes people conform, it's fear of the possibility of violent reactions.

In fact, there is no limit to how daft people can actually be, whilst believing themselves to be entirely logical.

if you're confident enough and got a killer bod like I have what's wrong with it? it's when those with excess flesh do it and look less like mutton dressed as lamb more like a joint of pork dressed for roasting that it bothers me if they're prepared to pay top dollar to look like that then more fool them

too true. If you see some of the so-called celebrities or catwalk models, their clothes are made of some kind of...tissue paper or something, and they have paid thousands for it... more fool them!!
