Congratulations on your forthcoming happy event!
Personally, I wouldn't go too far - babies on planes are a nightmare: it's uncomfortable for them and annoying for those around you. NB remember that your little one will need his own passport.
Rome is wonderful, the most amazing city I've ever visited, though it'll be very hot in July, which isn't ideal with a little one. The good news, though, is that you can get to the beach quite quickly and cool off.
Paris is the obvious choice (and you can get there by train) but not personally a favourite of mine. If you want a city break, maybe somewhere like Prague would be good.
If you want a beach holiday, Portugal is great for families, and the air tends to be a bit fresher than at most Med resorts.

Portugal is lovely. Its not to far to go and isnt as manic and busy as Spain.
I would recommend the Algarve having been there myself a few times.
If not and you like the idea of Spain, Majorca is really nice. I went Cala d'or last year and had a lovely time.
If you want to splash out why not go America, Florida. Great weather and im sure your little boy would love going to the Magic Kingdom!
Have a brillant time.

A great place for families is in the Costa Del Sol....it's called La Carihuela..............it has lovely clean sandy beaches, plenty of nice places to eat and is quiet enough at night for young kids ! It is situated between Torremolinos and Benalmadena...You should look it up on the net...i've been going for 15 years first with my parents and now with my husband and my 18 month old daughter...i first took her when she was 10 months !!! You wouldn't be dissapointed.

Try Thailand.
The Island of Koh Samui has several kid-friendly resorts. It is easy to fly into, beautiful and not very expensive.
