For traditional Christmas markets try Salzburg in Austria or Munich just over the border in Germany. If you plan it right you could probably hit both as they are less than two hours apart by train.

Germany has the most well-known Christmas markets (Christkindlmarkts, or Weihnachtsmarkts), as well the largest number of them. Just about every large city, and even medium-sized city, has one... some of the larger ones have several simultaneous Christmas markets. Koln (Cologne) had six going on when I drove up there a couple years ago to attend the main one, at the foot of the cathedral. Some of the most famous ones are in Nurnberg (Nuremberg) in Bavaria, Koln (Cologne) on the Rhein in Nordrhein-Westfalen, and Rudesheim, also on the Rhein, in Hessen. Frankfurt has a good one, held in the Romerplatz. I live near Frankfurt, close to Mainz and Wiesbaden, and both of those cities have Christmas markets, too. Pick a city--odds are it'll have one. Enjoy a hot, refreshing mug of Gluhwein, and enjoy some Lebkuchen... German Christmas markets are not to be missed!!

We went to a Christmas Market in Vienna, Austria 2 years ago. It was brilliant. I've never seen anything like the decorations and general Christmas items on display. We were given mulled wine and roasted chestnuts and it was a truly magical experience. It was also snowing which added to the trip. I would highly recommend it.
