Probably because it has created by Led Zeppelin, probably the greatest group of musicians ever. Most rock groups from then til now still look up to them and inspired by them.

...personally, i think that the stairway to heaven is definitely one of the things most people would like to climb to the top...for once you've reached the top, you'll find eternal life...and that song really portrays what many people forget, that gold and money cannot get you in heaven, you may bribe a few along the way, but it still won't grant you access and it's just saying what many people were feeling...people relate to it, it's a common issue and that's something you want in a song and yet it came from good old Led...not considered to be holy, yet they understand that mentality and they're top notch muso's! ...it's got a good sound, you can play it at almost any occasion! ...and besides, better the stairway to heaven than the free-fall to hell! ...but then again, there are so many good, touching and beautiful songs...it's like art to me, how can you say this is good and that is crap...art is art and art is beautiful and represents many different moods and feelings and they're all valid!

because of the truth and feeling involved throughout the song and the fact that the sound of the original CANNOT be recreated because of how jimmy page manipulated the feedback of the amp he was using at the time and the natural vibrations of his 18-string guitar. also, the guitar solo is awsome, page alternates playing soft and hard throughout the solo so theres alot of notes you ahve to listen for and its just awsome. and it doesnt have anything to do with the fact that theres a satanic message in it.

Probably because of the way it's structured. Pretty & soft opening & then a rocking build-up.
It's been copied maaany tiems since, so it's clear that it touched a nerve to many during the 70s.

I think because of its diversity. Bohemian rhapsody was chosen best song of all time once too. I think because songs like these have a lot of diversity in them.

When it first came out :
All the good kids liked it because their parents hated it. All the bad kids liked it because they say if you play it backwards it has the Devil talking or something like that.
And now ~ well, everyone just likes it because it rocks!
